A Nice Surprise
Today in the mail I received a large envelope from the “Art Show at the Dog Show” folks. I opened it to find a nice green ribbon, a full color program from the show and two checks–one for my “Best Art depicting a Herding Breed” award and one from the sale of all three of my photos! I’m already picking out potential entries for next year!

Hose Play!
All my Cardis LOVE to play in the hose–and after months of not being able to partake in hose play, Riley was especially eager for Spring to finally arrive.

Size matters (at least in Cardis)
There’s been a recent discussion on ShowCardi-L about size in Cardigans. I have dogs at both ends of the Cardi size spectrum: Riley weighs in around 38 pounds at his ‘usual’ weight. When he was competing in obedience and agility, I tried to keep him at 35-36 pounds, but that was pretty thin for him. Zoey, on the other hand, is about 22-24 pounds at any given moment, though I think currently she’s on the thin side and I’m actually trying to put a pound on her. For obvious reasons, I keep her thin–the sports she competes in, especially flyball, are very hard on Corgi bodies.
I would NEVER even consider running a dog of Riley’s size and build in the sport of flyball. In flyball, the dogs run multiple heats back-to-back during a race, meaning they are often going over 32 to 40 jumps in a matter of 2 to 3 minutes time–not to mention hitting the flyball box at nearly full speed! I truly believe if there is an ideal body-type for a Corgi running in flyball, Zoey has it.
I really love Zoey’s size and build, given what I do with her–for athletics, I believe she is truly close to perfection.

Happy Birthday Lil’ Dude!
Twelve years ago a litter of Cardi puppies was born in Portland. If memory serves me, there were six puppies total and the runt of the litter was a red-and-white male who went by the name of “Twister” back then.
These days everyone knows him as Rugby. Rugby-Do. Lil’ Dude. The Rug-man.
Happy Birthday to my favorite grumpy boy of all time!

Riley Update
Well, after three days of being on his various medications, Riley seems to finally be feeling a wee bit better. He’s still limping a bit on his left leg and he still doesn’t bark (it’s been VERY quiet around here for the past few days), but at least he felt good enough to play with one of his favorite toys tonight.
