Ummmh…it’s snowing?

So yesterday it rained. And rained. And rained. It did not stop raining the entire day. And this wasn’t just a light drizzle, it was a soaking rain.

Before bed, I turned on the news to see if there was any flooding going on (and there was). We had nearly an inch of rain fall between 4 pm and 10 pm yesterday. That, combined with the  18 inches of snow that melted last week, was causing all sorts of flooding, mudslides, etc.

Then I watch the weather segment and the weatherman says, “It looks like it will be snowing here by midnight tonight.”

My immediate thought is, ‘What the heck has this dude been smoking?’ It was 51 degrees yesterday afternoon while it was pouring down rain. It’s not exactly snow weather.

So this is what the backyard looks like this morning:

Something You Don’t Normally See in Portland

We took a walk around the neighborhood on Sunday afternoon–in Eastmoreland, several of the streets were closed to allow kids (and adults!) to sled, ski and snowboard down the slopes. Usually us Portlanders have to travel up to Mt. Hood to participate in our winter activities, but not this year!

oh hey–guess what? it’s snowing…and snowing…and snowing…

oh hey. still snowing. at first they said another 2 inches today. now they are saying 4 or 5 inches today.

they suspect we’ll be closing in on 20 inches total by the end of the day.

and they say,

“this is some sort of snow record for portland.” imagine that.

last winter (the whole winter) we had no snow. zero. the year before we had 1 inch (over the course of three months). and now we’ll have 18 or 19 inches in three days.

rugby has decided that it’s just easier to poop in the house than to go outside.

who can blame him?

Corgi-Proof Fence (not)

Our front yard is surrounded by a lovely little fence Eric built back in 2004 (I remember the year because he built it while Shannon and I were attending the 2004 Cardi National).

It’s about 3 feet high–just right for containing little dwarf dogs. Of course, back in 2004, Eric apparently wasn’t anticipating the Christmas 2008 blizzard in Portland.

Here’s a pic I snapped at 6pm tonight–and there’s more snow on the way…

19 degrees, 30 mph wind gusts and dry, powdery snow. Is this really Portland?

From our living room window:

CRAZY snow!

We’re up to about 4 or 5 inches right now–and it’s still coming down at a rapid pace. It hasn’t stopped at all today–and the temperature just keeps dropping (it’s about 22 degrees right now with gusty east winds). The dogs are loving it–as am I.

It’s COLD outside!

We are now into day 3 of our little ‘arctic storm blast’ here in Portland. Temps all week are expected to remain below freezing. For those of you not from around here, this is a RARITY!

Zoey walked to work with me the other morning–it was 24 degrees outside so I made her wear her coat. She wasn’t pleased with me, but I think once we got walking, she appreciated it a little more.
